3 / 5"Moonwalk Perfect, but Emotions Missing"
01. What’s Michael up to?
The film attempts to capture a phase from the life of Michael Jackson — not his full journey, but a specific stretch: from his childhood under the strict and controlling Joseph Jackson to his rise as a solo global phenomenon.
We see a 10-year-old Michael, raised in a poor household, shaped under military-like discipline by a father who treats his sons less like children and more like a performing unit. The formation of the Jackson 5, the rise to fame, and eventually Michael breaking away from his father’s control — that’s essentially the arc.
But here’s the thing —
This isn’t a full biopic.
It’s a phase-based story, focusing mainly on father–son conflict and the early rise to stardom.
The tone remains surprisingly neutral — almost bland.
There’s no emotional spike, no dramatic high, no strong pull. The film heavily relies on musical bits and iconic recreations to keep the audience engaged.
02. Is it worth the watch?
Honestly… not entirely.
As a fan, I walked in with high expectations — and walked out disappointed. Not because the film is bad, but because it feels too limited and underwhelming for someone like Michael Jackson.
Your immediate reaction:
A very flat experience with minimal highs.
Did it meet expectations?
Not at all.
If you’re expecting:
Concert-level energy
Goosebumps-inducing performances
A deep emotional journey
…this film doesn’t deliver that.
Only the last 30–40 minutes truly feel like a Michael Jackson film — that stage presence, that aura, that magic. But that’s not enough to carry a 2+ hour film.
Who will connect more?
General audience / newcomers to MJ
Who might be disappointed?
Fans — especially those who know what MJ truly represents
Blunt Take:
It recreates Michael Jackson… but doesn’t fully understand him.
03. What clicks?
Performance
Jaafar Jackson benefits hugely from resemblance — at times, you genuinely feel like you’re watching Michael himself. But performance-wise, it’s not extraordinary. Also, the script doesn’t give him enough depth to truly shine.
Musical & Iconic Moments
This is where the film wins:
Recording studio bits from childhood
Early stage performances
BTS glimpses of creative processes
The Thriller idea setup
MTV breakthrough moments despite racial barriers
These parts remind you why MJ is MJ.
Dance & Nostalgia
The dance recreations and musical staging are solid and respectful. The nostalgia factor works — especially in the final stretch.
Technical Aspects
Production design and cinematography are decent
But honestly, they don’t leave a lasting impact due to weak storytelling
Emotional Connect
Very limited.
You see MJ more than you feel him.
04. What went wrong?
The biggest issue: Choice of storytelling.
Why reduce a once-in-a-lifetime global icon to just a father–son conflict drama?
No exploration of his broader struggles
No depth into his emotional world
No major career highs fully realised
No controversies touched (understandable, but still limiting)
The film plays it too safe.
Screenplay
Slow
Flat
Lacks engagement for long stretches
Emotional Disconnect
Despite the resemblance, the film rarely makes you feel Michael Jackson’s journey. It’s more observational than immersive.
Missed Opportunity
This could have been a powerful first part setting up everything — but instead, it feels like a dragged prelude waiting for something bigger.
05. Finally?
Michael is not a bad film — but it’s a disappointing one, especially for fans.
It recreates the icon visually and musically, but emotionally and narratively, it barely scratches the surface.
Theatre or OTT?
Theatre: Only for the final 40 minutes (concert sequences are worth it)
OTT: For the rest of the film
Who should watch it?
New audiences curious about MJ
Viewers who enjoy slow, phase-based biopics
Who should skip or lower expectations?
Hardcore fans
Those expecting a powerful, complete biopic
Final Line:
A legend this big deserved a story that felt just as grand — not one that only hints at his greatness.
