RRR- AN ABSOLUTE EMOTIONAL DRAMA WITH TING OF ACTION
3.5/5
RRR- the magnum opus of 2022, the most awaited film released on 25/03/22, to blockbuster openings & great reviews. But, I took time to come to a conclusion with this film, so here's a review with detailed exploration. Come, creep in to know about the film & my opinion regarding the magnum opus.
01. A brief about RRR
RRR- is a historical drama with lot of emotional connect to it and a dash of action to it in Rajamouli's template. For me though, this is not a Rajamouli kind of film, neither his story or mark isn't writ large. It is new, different but not so entertaining nor worth the hype. It is a simple- detailed, un-wanted exaggeration of a single storyline. There are many aspects that give take us into the world of RRR, but also there are many other aspects that put the film on a boring side too.
02. Plot & storyline of RRR
RRR opens to a story of Fire & Water. Here fire is Ramaraju (Ram Charan) & water is Komaram Bheem (NTR). Their proceedings, intercessions, counter-attacks, bromance forms the plot of the film. RRR unlatches with a young girl "Malli" from Gond community being abducted by the British officers in 1920 at Adilabad district, Telangana for her mellifluous voice & ability to sing folk songs with life-like soul written all-over. Here starts the story.
There in the film is cut shot to a huge blodshed kind scene at Delhi, here we are introduced to the lement fire in the film- Ramcharan as Ram alias Ramraju who is a strict British police officer working as a scout with a motto to supply weapons to his community in his village- so that they have equal power to fight against the British in their struggle to attain freedom, any other detail is a spoiler. Here Ram awaits an opportunity to be promoted as a special Britain officer to know much about the weapons supply & transport- integral unit. As the young girl was abducted, we are introduced to another important character in the film- NTR as Komaram Bheem alias Bheem. Bheem is the shepherd of Gond community and he comes in rescue of that young girl to Delhi. So, the British officers are given information that not to take easy about that shepherd, so being alarmed the government puts up a deal of prmoting the officer who strives to find Bheem alive and wounded. So, Ram sees it as an opportunity to get into the weapon supply & transport integral unit & he's on duty.
There the film again flips on storyline, fortunately both the characters with their responsibilities but hiding the truth from each other, meet & are great friends in no time. Their bonding of friendship is utilized as a screen space in evaluating their respective duties. In no time, they know about each other' true attires & then begins the war sequences. They fight one on one, with each other & together. What actually happened, did Bheem rescue Malli, and did Ram fulfill his duty, is something to watch in the film.
03. Theme of RRR
RRR isn't a complete patriotic film nor a commercial one. It is a mixture of every genre. We have adventure scenes, massacre kind scenes, love story, friendship bonding & beyond everything there is an extra dosage of emotion. So, friendship is one of the major themes in the film, it is one element that is deciding the faith of film & characters in the film. Other element is the emotional connect that characters have towards each other. Watch the film to know more about them.
04. What about the character Ramraju played by Ramcharan.
Ramraju the police officer on a duty (incognito) hiding his true intention is executed very well in the film. He is on a motto to give every individual a pistol to revolt against the British government to attain freedom. In his struggle to win against his intent, he sees an opportunity in catching the shepherd Bheem. But their bond as great friends keeps standing in the way of achieving his intent. But is he successful in fulfilling his desire or has he obeyed to his bonding to his friend, is something to watch for in the film.
Ramcharan plays a career best role, his fans can etch it in their hearts of hearts for years to come. He is fire in the film & that aggression is vivid in the film through his charming eyes. His looks, style, attire, physique everything hits the chord perfectly. No doubt, if he is the most awarded artist after the success of the film. His eyes speak, there are lot of scenes in the film, where he is going through lot of trauma- depression- questioning himself & in all the scenes there is not even a single dialogue, so there, that is there that his eyes speak with the audience. There are scenes where he is physically or mentally weak, in one scene he is hit by a snake & is going through lot of pain, again one more scene he is struck against a pointed edge of a tree bark and is being chased by troops. In all those scenes his professional acting, gives spine chills to audience. He is the best thing ever happened to this film.
05. NTR as Komaram Bheem.
NTR gets a furious yet gain an emotional character. He is a beast, I'am jealous. NO one in this industry can act like him. He breathes through the character of Bheem. His performances in few scenes made me move into tears. Like the character Ram, this character Bheem to has lot of trauma emotional & physical & he is pro actor no doubt. But in comparison, Ram has got more weightage than Bheem in terms of characterization or acting.
Bheem the shepherd of Gond community comes in rescue of the young girl Malli & his intent is clear from starting till end. But he to goes in through that phase of emotional trauma in handling his bonding with Ram which obstructs his motto, but he's clear, rather chooses his motto over friendship. So, Bheem is a lot more confident & aggressive one in the film.
06. How did both of them (Ram & Bheem) together do.
SPLENDID!! one word- they are brilliant! I loved them. Their bromance just gels in so well, that you forget who they are in real life, but you are just into the world of RRR right from their introductions as told by the director, such are their performances. If comparison is drawn, who's good? I will go with Ram, in terms of characterization- there is something so good with that character- entire film depends on him- with just a great dependence on Bheem's character. But, we will love both of them equally, towards the end of the film.
07. About other characters in the film.
Alia Bhatt as Seetha & Oliva Morris as Jennifer are perfect. They do justice. Their roles have an importance in the film, though minimal but powerful. Seetha is a powerful character, her performance in few scenes makes it a interesting link in the film. Alia Bhatt just shines with here kind of emotions & innocence. Oliva is a good performer, but I loved Seetha more than Oliva inspite of a very minimal space given to her.
Other characters, like Ajay Devagan as Baba, Sriya Saran as Ram's mother in flashback scenes, Ray Stevenson as governor general, Alison Doddy as queen and Rahul Ramakrishna, Samuthakarani get few important characters in the film. Their existence makes a mark & are utilized properly.
08. About Rajamouli & his taking. Is RRR worth this hype?
I don't think this is worth this hype!! It is a simple story with a detailed explanation from scene to scene , part to part. Eventually in between it appears like a monologue & the feeling of that epic is gone, due to the lengthy explanations.
This is not a Rajamouli kind film, it appears strange. Of course there were scenes that take the audience towards the edges of seats, but an overall experience is just on a boring side. There is lot of emotional drama & I think that detail is simply exaggerated & unwanted. All the physical trauma that Ramcharan goes through in the film is simply lagged, when he is hit by a snake & later till he vomits the venom & again struck against the bark piece & the entire slow-motion chase shots are lagged. Every time we find Ramcharan vomiting something either blood/venom or something else, here or there in the film to highlight the pain he is going through, but the immediate next scene he is absolutely ok & he's bashing some or the others very badly!! I don't know what logic it is?, though he is a gem of actor, still the magic is'nt any more persistent. At a point of time, movie is damn slow paced that you forget why such and such scene is playing over. Many a times film is predictive, every scene becomes boring from then. So, I'll say this film- Rajamouli fails!!
09. About Music & other technical deaprtments.
Keeravani- the legendary musician does justice to the film. BGM is a savior, at some junctions the scenes are elevated to such an extent because of his score. Especially the revolt scenes, temple scene & the climax - all of them are guarantee goosebump scenes because of his score. Songs too are great! Ramam Raghuramam- which didn't appeal before the movie release, is a sureshot spine chilling number in the film- that climax & this song- OMG- you'll love it.
The VFX team, Cinematography are of top notch, no doubt. Only these technicalities make it a huge film, but not the story or direction. But felt editing should have been better, more or less it appears like a slideshow, not a movie.
10. Weak points in the film.
Direction
Lengthy explanations
Unwanted violence or physical trauma in Ram's character
Illogical proceedings- the heroes see death in one scene- the next scene they are perfectly alright to bash the troops!!
Slow motion shots
Screenplay
Over mileage of emotions
11. Overall experinece
RRR is visually sound film, watch it for experience- once in blue moon we get to watch such grandeur in films. But, expecting a strong story plot & strict adherence to storyline will disappoint you. Again, fan of NTR or Ramcharan- then watch for them. Again can watch for the brilliant BGM score by Keeravani Garu. VFX, Cinematography make it a feel good film. But over dosage of emotional scenes make it flatter, they are good but unwanted. Don't think this is the usual Rajamouli film, cause there is no particular plot in this film. So, I'll recommend but with limitations. Don't wait for OTT, it is not a television kind film, it is something that needs only theater experience.
