A Loud Mix of Masala & Mayhem, and a Plot that Wobbles than it Walks!!

01. All about Coolie.

The noisest film Coolie by Lokesh Kanagarajan is just the same other mixture of all his previous films like Kaithi, Leo or Master, Vikram etc. We have many actors in the film delivering performances to the content that falls flat & almost has nothing pretty new or fresh to offer.

We all know what fans expect from Rajinikanth's films, but this is too routine that even fans are bored with the wobbling content that has no steadiness at all. Begins with Rajini as a teetotaler for past 30 years & which also has a past for such action, moving to Nagarjuna as Simon involving in some malicious activities & troubling people, with finally ending on something too different.

02. What actually went wrong in the film?

It has a concept but that is wasted with so much of unwanted action, screenplay misfired & bad execution. Neither the actors could elevate or bring the story to a benchmark. Everything from the beginning will fire wrong in this film.

The 170 minutes long film comes up with many flasbacks & past stories to connect with dots but fails terribly. This is not one such film for those who expected from Lokesh nor also a film for Rajini sir's fans too. The heavily plot driven first half sets hopes for later part but still before the disaster second half sleeves up, we find many inconsistencies in the first half itself. Once energetic Superstar is now playing old, tired, powerless Coolie & which is very sad to see however. Dayal character by Malayalam actor. Soubin got a meaty role but was executed to an utter failure. Such a pain in head his character was in the entire second half.

Though film has a good backdrop setup, I feel the inconsistencies in the script didn't let it happen until the fine closure. Characters weren't given their due nor there isn't any depth in the dry writing. Cameos by Amir Khan or Upendra aren't worth any mention. Sruthi Hasan & Sathyaraj were under utilised or their characters lacked basic sense in writing. Screenplay is the biggest blow. Editing needs an editor first, every frame was edited to abrupt cuts or non sync scene continuations.

03. But what can we watch for? Or atleast are there any moments that make this a watchable one?

Seriously we can count on fingers but still they are worth mentioning. I didn't like the character Simon played by Telugu Manmadhudu/King Akkineni Nagarjuna but I loved the way he enacted it. The simple ease, grace & finesse that this man possess at this age is just commendable. The way this fittest & the most stylish actor carries that swag or aura of a real crime kingpin who deals in luxury watches is just treat to watch. I feel he's an asset to the film, forget whether his character played or underplayed but Nagarjuna as Simon just rocked in his brand new avathar. Movie might fail, but Nagarjuna as Simon will be remembered at least for few more months.

Music by Anirudh Ravichandran is good enough, but felt there's so much English rather than Tamil, if that's really ok with audience then it should also be fine for me. Until then he played safe.

04. So what at last?

Coolie is basically a very bad or terribly executed film with dry writing & unwanted action with all repitative commercial elements & no freshness at all. Rather this comes with a dosage of commotion to create irritation & frustration in the viewers. Not a film that we expect from Lokesh nor Rajinikanth. Works in parts, the first half sets up things for second half to realise that it's gonna sink only towards the end & there's nothing to loop on this for anything. I felt this film has concept for only 20-35 minutes & rest of the movie was a filler for that central plot.
