Brutal, Messy, Terrifically Violent, Confusing — Yet Everything Falls Into Place Eventually

01. What's Dhurandhar up to?

Dhurandhar begins in the aftermath of some of India's darkest moments, including the Kandahar hijacking and the Parliament attack, before evolving into an ambitious espionage thriller set deep inside Pakistan's criminal and political underworld.

The story follows Jaskirat Singh Rangi, a death-row convict who is recruited by Indian intelligence and sent undercover into Pakistan as Hamza Ali Mazari. His mission is simple on paper but impossible in execution — infiltrate the mafia networks, gain the trust of powerful gangsters, uncover terror operations, and help India strike back from within.

The film combines espionage, politics, gang warfare, patriotism, and revenge into one massive narrative. It is serious, violent, political, and heavily character-driven. However, it takes its own sweet time setting everything up. For nearly half the film, audiences are introduced to various factions, gang leaders, politicians, and intelligence players before the story finally starts connecting its dots.

At 3.5 hours, it is unquestionably exhausting, but the payoff eventually arrives.

02. Is It Worth the Watch?

Definitely — but with a warning.

My immediate reaction was confusion. The film felt messy, overcrowded, and overwhelmingly violent. The sheer number of characters and political dynamics can leave viewers struggling to keep up.

Yet the strange thing about Dhurandhar is that it improves the more you think about it. The film ages like fine wine. Many scenes that initially appear random gain meaning later. Characters, motivations, and betrayals start making sense.

Did it meet expectations?

Yes — though not immediately. It rewards patience more than attention.

Those who enjoy long-form storytelling, slow world-building, and layered political dramas will appreciate it. Those expecting a straightforward, fast-moving spy thriller may find themselves frustrated.

03. What Clicks?

The biggest achievement is Aditya Dhar's confidence. He trusts his audience enough to stay patient through a complex setup, believing everything will eventually connect.

Performances

Ranveer Singh is phenomenal. His transformation into Hamza/Jaskirat is among his strongest performances. He balances vulnerability, rage, patriotism, and manipulation effortlessly.

Akshaye Khanna delivers a terrific performance as Rehman Dakait. Menacing, unpredictable, and powerful, he provides the perfect antagonist.

The supporting cast is equally strong. R. Madhavan, Sanjay Dutt, Arjun Rampal, Sara Arjun, Danish and Rakesh Bedi all contribute effectively.

Action & Drama

The film is packed with violence. Brutal gang wars, betrayals, executions, and revenge dominate the narrative. While excessive at times, the action is undeniably engaging.

Memorable Moments

The most enjoyable portions are when Hamza manipulates rival Pakistani factions into destroying one another without realizing they are serving India's mission. Watching his long game unfold is incredibly satisfying.

At 3.5 hours, the film constantly tests patience. Several stretches could have been trimmed without affecting the overall impact.

The second issue is the level of fictionalization.

While the film claims realism through its political backdrop, Hamza often feels less like a covert operative and more like an unstoppable action hero. The amount of violence, heroism, and success he achieves stretches credibility.
